Surprise in Heaven
The story goes about a man who after entering the
gates of haven was overtaken by surprise and confusion. The cause was not the beauty of paradise, but the people he saw there:
liars, thieves, alcoholics and all kind of sinners!
As if this was not enough, he saw there people that hurt him when
he was a child, even the old neighbor who was never nice to him… And to top it off, the one person he was absolutely
sure was going to go straight to hell was there, too, looking unbelievable well, sitting on cloud nine...
He turned
to his angel and told him that God surely made a mistake... He demanded an explanation for these unacceptable things: "How
could all these sinners get up here?” - he asked. “And why is everybody so quiet? Please answer me!"
"Hush",
said the angel. "They are all in shock. They didn't expect to see you here."
This story is obviously just a parable,
but it illustrates well our limited insight in other people’s minds and motives. We all have people in our lives that
we think will never deserve heaven.
Never underestimate somebody’s potential to change to the better. As Jesus
said, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you." (Mat 21:31).
Biblical Text: "Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last." Luke
13:30.
